University of Montevallo to host ACT Prep Course

The University of Montevallo will be hosting a single-day ACT Prep Course for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The purpose of this course is to equip students with test-taking strategies to enable them to be better prepared for the ACT.

“During this course, we provide students the test-taking skills necessary to help them improve their scores by helping them understand how the ACT is scored and how the content is delivered,” said Dr. Jennifer Alexiou-Ray, associate professor of education who serves as instructor for the course.

One of the most important benefits of ACT preparation courses is that they help students assess their strengths and weaknesses to know their level of readiness for the ACT. By becoming more familiar with the sections and format of the ACT, students will have an easier time taking the official test.

A parent of a high school student who took the four-day ACT Prep Course earlier this summer said her son’s score improved by four points after completing the course. “He has decided that he does not want to settle with that score, and he is going to take it again in August,” the parent wrote in an email to Alexiou-Ray. “I am so proud of him, and I just want to thank you for having the class for the students. It truly was a help!”

Because most students taking a prep course score higher than without the course, future college scholarships and financial aid are often a good return on the investment.

The $110 single-day course covers all ACT test subjects with in-class practice testing and includes lunch and a snack. Each participant will also receive a copy of the official ACT Prep book, a math review card and other resources.
