MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo will host a town hall meeting featuring a presentation by Ed McMahon, Senior Resident Fellow at the Urban Land Institute (ULI) in Washington, D.C., Thursday, Sept. 20, at 1:30 p.m., in the Merchants and Planters Bank Auditorium in Humanities Hall on the UM campus. McMahon will speak on “The Dollars and Sense of Sustainable Development.”
A leading authority on topics related to sustainable development, land conservation, smart growth and historic preservation, McMahon leads ULI’s worldwide efforts in research and education related to environmentally sensitive development policies and practices. He has organized successful efforts to acquire and protect urban parkland, wilderness areas and other conservation properties.
Prior to joining the ULI, McMahon served as vice president and director of land use planning for The Conservation Fund in Arlington, Va., where he helped protect more than five million acres of land of historic or natural significance. He is the co-founder and former president of Scenic America, a national non-profit organization devoted to protecting America’s scenic landscapes. In addition, he taught law and public policy at Georgetown University Law Center and served in the U.S. Army, both at home and abroad.
An Alabama native, McMahon holds a B.S. from Spring Hill College in Mobile, an M.A. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law School. He has authored or co-authored 15 books and more than 300 articles.
