MONTEVALLO—The Student Government Association at the University of Montevallo will host Carnival for a Cure, an event to raise awareness of and money for cancer research, Friday, Oct. 17, from 4-7 p.m. on UM’s Main Quad. This event is open to the public, and everyone is invited to attend. Tanya Hoang, SGA president, said, “As a team, we wanted to put together an event that would be fun as well as purposeful to, not just campus, but the entire Montevallo community.”
The following organizations will have booths at the carnival: AAA of Alabama, America’s First Credit Union, K & J’s Elegant Pastries, Golden Key, Minority Student Union, Lambda Chi Alpha, Falconettes Dance Team, Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Mu, Freshman Forum, Delta Gamma, FCS Student Group, Math Club, Sigma Alpha Iota, Alpha Gamma Delta, The B.O.N.D., Alpha Tau Omega, Alpha Delta Pi and Montevallo Honors Organization.
Booths will offer corn hole, a dress up photo booth, face painting, balloon sales, ring-toss, balloon darts, dessert walk, moon walk, twin spin, skee ball, moon shot toss, basketball toss and chip shot. Fair-type food will be operated by UM student groups and outside businesses.
Jenny Bell, UM’s director of student life, said, “So far, SGA has raised $470 for cancer research through participation from organizations and businesses in the Carnival. They hope to raise more money toward this cause on Friday night when the students, faculty, staff and community enjoy these booths. Tickets will be sold for 10 cents each, and participants can use the tickets to purchase items (hotdogs and snow cones) or play the games at the booths. The booths range in price from one ticket to five tickets. K & J’s Elegant Pastries will also have cupcakes on sale for cash.”
Bell spoke of the background of the event, “When SGA decided to plan a carnival for the fall, they wanted to add something into the event that would make a difference in the community. So many people are affected directly by cancer or know someone who has been affected. SGA felt like raising money as a university community to help fight this disease would be a way that they could provide great weekend programming to UM students while also focusing on a community issue and need.”
