The Department of Art awards scholarships to incoming freshmen and transfer students and continuing Art majors. These merit-based scholarships require an application including a statement of purpose and portfolio submission. Applicants must be Art majors to be eligible and these scholarships must be applied for each year. Portfolios should contain a maximum of 10 images and/or links to video/sound art. The scholarship committee is looking for work that indicates who you are as an artist and/ or designer. Your statement of purpose should describe your plans for the future, while at the university or after and any extracurricular activities that enhance your eligibility for this scholarship.

New Freshmen & Transfer Students Art Scholarship –Deadline: March 1, 2023

Who is eligible for the Freshman / Transfer Students Art Scholarship?

Applicants must be accepted to the University of Montevallo before applying for the Freshmen / Transfer Students Art scholarship. In order to receive the award students must be enrolled full time and on track for a degree in Art for the entire 2023-2024 academic year. Scholarship monies will be divided evenly between the fall and spring semesters.

  • Statement of Purpose Why you want to study art at the University of Montevallo.
  • Portfolio of 10 digital images of your best artwork in any media (or links to video/sound files). 
    • Identify your work with title of work, medium, size, and date 
    • Compile your images with information into a document (we recommend Google Slides or PowerPoint) and save it as a single PDF. View a SAMPLE PORTFOLIO
  • The UPLOAD FILE has to be under 25 MB for application upload.

Who is eligible for the Current Student Scholarship?

Applicants must be currently enrolled as an Art major at the University of Montevallo before applying for the scholarship within the department. In order to receive the award, students must be enrolled full time and on track for a degree in Art.

Dean of Fine Arts Scholarship Amount varies. Available to first-time students with ACT of 22 or above or first-time transfers with a 3.0 or better GPA. Jefferson County Alumni Art Association Scholarship Amount varies. Awarded to an incoming freshman or transfer student who is a resident of Jefferson County and is committed to majoring in art. March 1, 2023 New Freshmen and Transfer Students
Joan Gregory Art Scholarship Amount varies. Awarded to an incoming freshman or transfer student committed to majoring in studio art and/or art education. March 1, 2023 New Freshmen and Transfer Students
Madge Taylor Sims Scholarship Amount varies. Available to sophomore, junior, or senior art student. Awarded based on portfolio or other evidence of talent and desire to excel in art. A minimum GPA 2.0. Feb. 3, 2023,

Dorothy Robbins Mullican Scholarship

Established in 1991 by the Mullican family in honor of Dorothy Robbins Mullican, an alumna of the University of Montevallo. The scholarship is open to all junior and senior level art majors.

Amount varies. Available to a junior or senior art student committed to an art-related career.

Meacham-Metz Scholarship

Established in 2017 by Jonathan S. Meacham, in memory of his father, Donald Meacham, and in honor of Professor Emeritus Ted Metz. The scholarship is for new promising art students.

Amount varies. Available to student within the College of Fine Arts, preference given to Art majors.

Southern Progress Scholarship in Graphic Design Established in 2002 Art majors must have completed Art 255 Introduction to Graphic Design. Amount  varies. Minimum GPA 3.0 and a letter of intent required with application. Feb. 3, 2023,

Ted Metz Scholarship

Established in 2017 by the generous giving of art alumni to recognize the forty-two years of distinguished teaching, service and art by Professor Emeritus Ted Metz at the University of Montevallo.

Amount varies. Available to all art majors who have demonstrated strong commitment and skills in art.

Virginia Barnes Memorial Scholarship

The Virginia Barnes Memorial Scholarship in Art was established in honor of a long-time faculty member and alumna in art.

R. Marshall Pitts Sculpture Endowment Fund The R. Marshall Pitts Sculpture Endowment Fund was established on January 22, 2008 for current art majors with a preference given to sculpture. Amounts varies. Feb. 3 2023,

The Commander Marguerite Scholarship Must have applied and been accepted to the University of Montevallo. Must have a demonstrated financial need for scholarship support. Must be in good standing with the University.  Must be an Art major or minor. Eligibility may begin in freshman year and continue to graduation.
