Minor in Art

The art minor is available to any student with interest and ability in art.

Students are required to take 21 Art credit hours with Art 112: Drawing I, Art 122: 2-Dimensional Design and Color or Art 132: 3-Dimensional Design, and Art 120: Art History Foundations required.

Four additional courses are selected to meet students’ interest and should be approved by the department chair. Art minors may pursue a specific area in depth or take a variety of introductory studios.

Minor in Arts Administration

The Arts Administration Minor consists of 21 credit hours distributed among courses in business, finance and theatre, and three credit hours each from art, business and communication. Students from all UM majors may minor in arts administration. The Arts Administration Minor is designed for students with an interest in leading, managing and participating in arts organizations and activities across the arts sector.

Course requirements encourage students to see the relationship between arts and culture, communication, public relations, business and finance, as well as the needs and challenges facing the contemporary entertainment industry.

Experiential learning experiences in the form of applied credits provide students with hands-on learning opportunities that extend classroom learning into the campus arts community and provide students with professional experiences.

Students graduating with an Arts Administration Minor are prepared to work in a variety of settings within the arts sector and to successfully implement methodologies for arts program development and arts administration across a range of formal and informal, for-profit, nonprofit and public arts organizations within a community.

Minor in Art History

The Art Department offers a minor in Art History, which is open to students of all majors. The Art History curriculum supports the BFA, BA and BS programs by fostering an understanding of the historical, philosophical and social conditions of visual culture. Courses are offered in all periods of western art and architecture. Advanced classes in art theory and criticism are also offered.

The art history minor requires 21 credit hours. Required courses include ART 120:Art History Foundation and ART 220: Introduction to Art History. Five additional courses are selected from 300- and 400-level art-history courses and approved by the department Chair.
