The overriding mission of the University of Montevallo, unique in Alabama higher education, is to provide to students from throughout the state an affordable, geographically accessible, “small college” public higher educational experience of high quality with a strong emphasis on undergraduate liberal studies and with professional programs supported by a broad base of arts and sciences, designed for their intellectual and personal growth in pursuit of meaningful employment and responsible, informed citizenship.

University of Montevallo offers undergraduate and graduate students a learner-centered 21st century education informed by our liberal arts identity.

The University of Montevallo holds fast to the principles that we were founded upon and the mission that we have always upheld. We take pride in knowing that our curriculum is both challenging and affordable.

All Education programs that result in state licensure are also approved by the Alabama State Board of Education.

In October of 1896, the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School opened its doors to some 150 young women from all parts of the state. Annual University events include Homecoming/College Night and Founders’ Day, a celebration of the institution’s founding.

The University of Montevallo National Alumni Association includes 23,000 members and growing.

Duties of the UM Board of Trustees include selection of a president, approval of the budget, the securing of adequate financial resources, the establishment of broad institutional policy, and support of the administrative and educational functions of the institution and those officers and employees responsible for them.
