Mission Statement

The overriding mission of the University of Montevallo, unique in Alabama higher education, is to provide to students from throughout the state an affordable, geographically accessible, “small college” public higher educational experience of high quality with a strong emphasis on undergraduate liberal studies and with professional programs supported by a broad base of arts and sciences, designed for their intellectual and personal growth in pursuit of meaningful employment and responsible, informed citizenship.

All Education programs that result in state licensure are also approved by the Alabama State Board of Education.

History and Tradition

In October of 1896, the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School opened its doors to some 150 young women from all parts of the state. Annual University events include Homecoming/College Night and Founders’ Day, a celebration of the institution’s founding.

Duties of the UM Board of Trustees include selection of a president, approval of the budget, the securing of adequate financial resources, the establishment of broad institutional policy, and support of the administrative and educational functions of the institution and those officers and employees responsible for them.
